David Challinor from Potomac Boat Club is a Senior Scientist Emeritus for the Smithsonian Institution is 82 years old and will row his 30th consecutive Head Of The Charles® Regatta this year. He has won his age group 12 times since 1972. Harvard University graduate still rows 1000 miles a year and participates in FISA World Master's Championships.
Christopher 'Kit' Collins (Rivanna Rowing, VA) doesn’t need the standard time adjustment for age to win this event. He is a 1998 angioplasty heart patient, a retired Naval submarine Officer and a University Virginia Assistant Professor of Russian. Kit's tenacity has earned him several National sculling titles, three Head Of The Charles Veteran single championships and last year he appropriately crushed the course record by a whopping 47 seconds.
90+-year-old Ernestine Bayer of the Philadelphia Girls Rowing Club was originally slated to open the course for the 38th rowing of the Head Of The Charles® Regatta with a ceremonial row from Weld Boathouse to the finish line at 11:45 am on Saturday. Bayer would have been the oldest rower in the regatta, but unfortunately broke her clavicle while training on a treadmill in preparation for the Regatta. Bayer has appeared in the past several Regattas rowing the single and with various star rowing partners in the double, and will be missed; see you next year Ernie!
